Adding -ly and -ally

Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective:

     Adjective                               Adverb   

       quiet                                     quietly  

       recent                                   recently 

       soft                                       softly     

If the adjective already ends in y, change y to i:

    Adjective                                 Adverb    

     steady                                      steadily   

     weary                                       wearily   

However, if the adjective ends in -ic, add -ally (not -ly) to form the
adverb:
    
    Adjective                                    Adverb            

     basic                                         basically            

     dramatic                                  dramatically     

     enthusiastic                             enthusiastically 

     emphatic                                 emphatically     

     genetic                                     genetically         

     linguistic                                  linguistically     

     realistic                                    realistically       

    scientific                                   scientifically      

    specific                                     specifically         

The adverb publicly (from the adjective public) is an exception to this rule.
